Messages From the Principal

Open night
On Wednesday we were delighted to be able to celebrate our school, and our students’ work. The classrooms were open to our parents and carers to be able to observe and experience the wonderful classrooms and displays. I would like to thank our staff for their planning and preparation for the evening. I would like to highlight the art exhibition in the Conference room. Thank you to Miss Buser for coordinating the exhibition and the contributions made by the students.

Faction and Interschool Carnival
After the change of date due to inclement weather, we enjoyed a perfect day for our annual faction carnival. The students gave it their very best whilst being cheered on by their peers and family members. Our P&C provided an amazing cake stall and organised the food trucks whilst Pasta in the Valley did an amazing job, as always, in providing our students with additional lunches. I would like to thank and congratulate all our staff, parent volunteers, P&C and OSH Club for their assistance on the day and in particular Mrs Hesse for her preparation and organisation. This all culminated in an incredible effort at the Interschool carnival held the following week. I am delighted to inform you that we won the championship, two years in a row! What a team effort!!! More details available further in the newsletter.

Works
- Sink installed so that the students can clean their paint brushes after art classes.
- New carpet laid in the library.
- Unfortunately, the grass planted for the top oval was unsuccessful and will need to be redone. We are hopeful that the warmer weather will assist with the regrowth.

Learning in action: from commas to cultural connections
Year 1 and 2: commas can be fun!
Our Year 1 and 2 students have been diving into the wonderful world of commas, learning how to use them correctly in their writing. The students have been focusing on writing sentences with commas in a list—and having lots of fun doing it! Using engaging, hands-on activities, they “went shopping” for items, built their own burgers, and decorated pizzas—all while practising how to list ingredients correctly using commas. Who knew grammar lessons could be so delicious?

Kindy and Pre-Primary: telling richer stories
Our Kindy and Pre-Primary students have been developing their oral storytelling skills using colourful semantic icons. These visual tools help scaffold their language and support sentence development. One area we’ve been focusing on is helping students include the ‘when’ element in their stories. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be doing a range of fun and interactive activities that build their understanding of time and setting in storytelling. It’s all about laying the foundations for strong communication skills!

EALD: embracing our linguistic superpowers
At Dianella Heights Primary School, we celebrate the incredible linguistic diversity of our community. Did you know that 42 different languages are spoken across our school? Being multilingual is a true superpower - it boosts self-esteem, strengthens identity, and enhances cognitive and problem-solving skills. In our EALD (English as an Additional Language/Dialect) classes, we encourage students to embrace and be proud of their language skills.
How parents can help at home
You might wonder how parents can support their child’s language learning at home - especially if they don’t speak English fluently themselves. The good news is you don’t need to be fluent in English to make a big difference! All families can contribute to their child’s learning journey. One of the most powerful ways to support language development is by creating a language-rich home environment - whether that’s in English or your home language.
Here are some simple but effective ways to do that:
- Read and tell stories together
- Sing songs or nursery rhymes
- Play board games and engage in imaginative play
- Visit places like parks, shops, libraries, or the zoo
- Encourage conversations and ask open-ended questions
Language is all around us, and every interaction is an opportunity for learning. Thank you for being active partners in your child’s education!

Term 3 highlights
Wow - can you believe Term 3 is nearly over? It feels like it only just began! The past few weeks have flown by, and they’ve been packed with memorable moments and exciting events.
We cheered each other on at our Faction Carnival, celebrated the amazing men in our lives during our Father’s Day events, went on our very first excursion, and even welcomed families into our classrooms to showcase our AMAZING work.
Thank you so much for your ongoing support - it means the world to us, and we couldn’t do it without you!
Kindergarten news
In Kindergarten, we’ve been learning all about Protective Behaviours. The children have been exploring what it means to feel safe and unsafe, and how our bodies give us early warning signs—like shaky legs, sweating, a fast-beating heart, or that fluttery “butterflies in the tummy” feeling.
We’ve also been discussing the importance of knowing who we can go to for help if we ever feel unsafe. These conversations help build confidence and empower our children to speak up and stay safe.
We encourage you to chat with your child at home to reinforce these important messages. Thank you for being such an important part of their learning journey!
Pre-primary news
Our Pre-primary classes have had a busy and exciting couple of weeks! We celebrated Father’s Day with a fun-filled frisbee session, where dads or special male figures enjoyed some playful time together with the children. A big thank you to all the dads who came along and joined in the fun—we loved having you there!
The classes also enjoyed their excursion to AQWA, discovering amazing sea creatures, followed by an adventurous play session at Dinosaur Park. A special thank you to the parents who volunteered their time to assist on the excursion - we couldn’t have done it without you! Lots of smiles, laughter, and wonderful memories were made.

Writing extension classes
Through a community partnership with DHPS, Rise Learning provides Writing Extension classes for talented writers in Years 4, 5 and 6. Students selected by classroom teachers take part in three small-group sessions where they learn advanced writing techniques and craft a story.
In Term 3, Year 6 extension students focused on science fiction. They discussed the difference between sci-fi and fantasy fiction; and explored different sci-fi sub-genres like space opera, dystopian and cyberpunk. Students then wrote an original sci-fi story drawing on topics like space exploration, artificial intelligence and interplanetary conflict.

Year 4 excursion - WA Boola Bardip Museum
Our Year 4 students recently embarked on a day of wonder, discovery, and just the right amount of “oohs” and “aahs” at the WA Museum Boola Bardip. From craning their necks under the mighty skeleton of Otto the blue whale, to hands-on innovation exhibits and immersive cultural journeys, the students proved themselves to be curious explorers of the highest order. The adventure ended on a futuristic note, as everyone stepped into the world of robotics with EV3 programming, where we suspect a few engineers of the future were quietly born.
The students were outstanding in both enthusiasm and respect, representing our school beautifully. A heartfelt thank you to our fantastic parent helpers who joined us - you deserve medals (or at least a coffee and a lie-down) for your support!

Year 5 excursion - WA Shipwreck Museum
This week, our Year 5 students enjoyed a fascinating excursion to the WA Shipwreck Museum in Fremantle. The visit brought our HASS history studies to life as students explored relics from famous shipwrecks, including the Batavia. They participated in interactive activities, deepened their understanding of early exploration and colonisation and asked thoughtful questions throughout the day. A big thank you to our parent helpers for giving up their time to join us. Your support made the day such a success!

Sports Report
Faction Carnival success!
In Week 7, we held a fantastic Faction Carnival, and it was a tremendous success! The day was filled with energy, enthusiasm, and team spirit from all students, staff, and families. It was wonderful to see so many smiles and personal bests throughout the day, both in individual events and team games.
Students participated with great determination and sportsmanship across all events, including classic team games such as leaderball, passball, tunnelball, zig-zag relay, and the flag relay. These events not only showcased our students’ athletic skills but also highlighted their ability to work together and support one another.
Congratulations to the Emus, who were crowned overall Faction Carnival Champions! They demonstrated consistency and strength across all events. A special shout-out goes to the Platypuses, who were awarded the Spirit Award for their outstanding encouragement, cheering, and positive attitude throughout the day.
We would like to thank all staff, volunteers, and families who helped make the carnival such a smooth and enjoyable experience.

2025 Interschool Athletics Carnival
On Tuesday 16 September, DHPS proudly competed at the Interschool Athletics Carnival. After weeks of dedication and training, our students truly showcased their talent, determination and school spirit.
We are thrilled to announce that DHPS has once again taken home the championship in 2025 – back-to-back champions! What an incredible achievement for our school community.
Every student gave their personal best, and we couldn’t be prouder. We had several place-getters across individual events, and our team absolutely dominated the team games, winning 7 out of 8 events – a phenomenal effort!
The day concluded with some of our strongest team performances, especially in the relays. We won several events and capped off the carnival with a commanding 1st place finish in the Grand Relay.
A big thank you to all the parents who came along to support our students, and to the staff for their assistance on the day – your support means so much.
Well done, DHPS – you’ve done us proud!
